Choosing white: twelve shades we actually use

North-facing rooms get cool, blue light for most of the year. A white that looks perfect in a sunny showroom can turn grey and flat at home.

We always paint large samples, at least A3, and look at them in the morning, at noon and after dark with the real lamps switched on.

For rooms facing north we choose whites with a little yellow or red in them. For south-facing rooms a neutral or slightly grey white keeps the light calm.

Ceilings are usually painted one step lighter than the walls, and always in a dead-flat finish.
